Why teams choose Modern Issue Templates
Auto-apply rules
Assign templates to projects and issue types, and the right template pre-fills the create screen automatically — no copy-pasting from old tickets.
Fill-in variables
Use {{currentUser}}, {{today+7d}}, {{projectKey}} and more. Variables resolve at apply time with inline validation and did-you-mean suggestions.
GitHub import
Import templates from any public repo file or Gist. YAML frontmatter is parsed into name, summary, labels, and assignees automatically.
Rich text templates
Format descriptions with headings, lists, code blocks with syntax highlighting, and links — edited inline or in a full template editor.
22 starter templates
Skip the blank canvas with a curated library across software, operations, product, team, and people categories, ready to import.
Multi-field pre-fill
Beyond summary and description, pre-fill labels, due date, components, priority, and more at create time (Advanced edition).
How it works
- 1
Open the Template Manager
In Jira, go to Apps → Modern Issue Templates. You get a table of all templates with inline editing, clone, and assign actions.
- 2
Create or import a template
Build one from scratch, import JSON or Markdown, or pull from GitHub. New installs can also import from the 22-template starter library.
- 3
Assign to projects and issue types
Pick which projects and issue types each template applies to. Conflicts are detected, and the winner takes over auto-apply immediately.
- 4
Create issues — templates apply automatically
When a user opens the create-issue screen for a matching project and issue type, the summary, description, and declared fields pre-fill. Users can still edit before creating.
Frequently asked questions
Open Apps → Modern Issue Templates, click Create Template, and write the summary plus a rich-text description. You can start from the 22-template starter library, or import JSON, Markdown, or GitHub files instead of authoring from scratch.
