# JSON Graph Viewer & Visualizer for Jira — User Guide

## What is JSON Graph Viewer & Visualizer for Jira?[](#what-is-json-graph-viewer--visualizer-for-jira "Direct link to What is JSON Graph Viewer & Visualizer for Jira?")

JSON Graph Viewer & Visualizer for Jira is an issue panel that turns JSON into an interactive node graph. Instead of scrolling through a wall of braces, you see objects, arrays and values as connected nodes you can expand, collapse, pan and zoom — right inside the Jira issue view.

The panel can load JSON from three places:

1. **Issue fields** — any field whose content is JSON (a REST payload, an API response or a config blob stored in a custom field).
2. **Issue properties** — structured JSON that other apps store on the issue as entity properties.
3. **Paste JSON** — type or paste any raw JSON, and it renders instantly. This works on every issue, even one with no JSON fields at all.

## Requirements[](#requirements "Direct link to Requirements")

* Jira Cloud.
* Installing requires a Jira administrator.
* The app asks for **read-only access** to work items. It cannot change any issue data, and JSON is rendered in your browser — nothing is stored or sent anywhere else.

***

## Installation[](#installation "Direct link to Installation")

1. Go to **Apps** → **Manage apps** (Jira administration).
2. Choose **Find new apps** and search for **JSON Graph Viewer & Visualizer for Jira**.
3. Click **Install** and approve the read-only permission.
4. There is nothing to configure — open any issue and the panel is ready.

## Opening the Panel[](#opening-the-panel "Direct link to Opening the Panel")

Open any issue, and find **JSON Graph Viewer** in the issue view panels. The panel opens with three tabs at the top: **Issue fields**, **Issue properties** and **Paste JSON**.

## The Three JSON Sources[](#the-three-json-sources "Direct link to The Three JSON Sources")

### Issue fields[](#issue-fields "Direct link to Issue fields")

The panel scans the issue's fields for content that parses as JSON.

* One match: it renders immediately, with the field name shown above the graph.
* Several matches: a dropdown appears so you can switch between them without leaving the panel.

### Issue properties[](#issue-properties "Direct link to Issue properties")

Apps often store structured JSON on an issue as entity properties (for example integration state or cached API data). Switch to the **Issue properties** tab to see those JSON blobs as graphs. If several exist, the same dropdown picker lets you move between them.

### Paste JSON[](#paste-json "Direct link to Paste JSON")

The **Paste JSON** tab gives you a syntax-highlighted editor. Type or paste raw JSON — a REST response from your browser dev tools, an API example, a webhook payload — and the graph updates as you type. A fresh panel starts with a small demo so you can see how it works before using your own data.

If the text isn't valid JSON, the panel tells you instead of rendering nothing:

> *That isn't valid JSON. Check the syntax and try again.*

## Code, Graph, or Both[](#code-graph-or-both "Direct link to Code, Graph, or Both")

A view-mode dropdown in the corner of the panel switches between:

| Mode | What you get |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Code** | The JSON formatted and syntax-highlighted, like your editor |
| **Graph** | The interactive node diagram |
| **Code + Graph** | Both, side by side — edit or read above, see the shape below |

In graph view you can:

* **Pan** — drag the canvas.
* **Zoom** — the **−** and **+** buttons, or **Fit** to frame the whole graph.
* **Collapse and expand** nodes — click a node's collapse control to fold an object or array into a single *n items* node and back.

## Themes[](#themes "Direct link to Themes")

The panel follows your Jira appearance: choose light or dark in your Jira profile and the graph, code view and controls switch with it.

## FAQ[](#faq "Direct link to FAQ")

**Nothing shows under "Issue fields" — is it broken?** No JSON-parseable field exists on that issue. Use the **Paste JSON** tab, or add a field that holds JSON (the panel picks it up automatically next time).

**Can the app change my issue data?** No. It requests read-only access, and rendering happens in your browser.

**Does pasting send my JSON to a server?** No. Pasted JSON is parsed and drawn locally in your browser session.

**Where do issue properties come from?** Other apps write them through Jira's entity-properties API. If the tab is empty, no app has stored JSON on that issue yet.
